In one of the most exciting games of the year in South Carolina High School Football Byrnes held off a late rally by Gaffney to win the 4A-DI state title 31-24. Earlier in the season Gaffney easily beat Byrnes 35-13 on Byrnes home field; it was a different story in the state championship game at Clemson University.
This is the fourth state championship at the 4A Division I level for Byrnes and their 11th state title in football overall. The game ended in dramatic fashion as Gaffney score on a 55 yard touchdown pass but they could not mount the final drive to tie the game. Quinshad Davis was the star for Gaffney as he finished the game with 185 yards receiving which pushed him over 2000 yards on the season through the air.
The state championship was a team effort by Byrnes as their defense scored two touchdowns and held Gaffney when they had the ball late with a chance to tie. The four turnovers forced by the Byrnes defense were a season high for the Gaffney offense. Byrnes now trails only Summerville and Gaffney with 11 state championship titles in football. Gaffney leads the state with 16 titles while Summerville has 12.
Now that high school football is over most fans are getting excited about other things such as after Christmas sales 2011. Rather than spending money in a troubled economy it might be wise to save. If money is saved it will be much easier to travel with a high school football season in 2012.
